FOUNDATIONS CLASSES
ART 101 / FND 113 :: Drawing 1
Beginning drawing course for Art majors. Students learn measuring and sighting, perspective, negative space, contour, gesture, composition and value.
ART 105 / GD 102 :: 2D-Design / Fundamentals of Design
Beginning course on design principles. Students employ compositional techniques with non-representational and representational forms, while utilizing line, shape, volume, value and color.
FS 103 :: Color Theory
Course covering hue, saturation, value, temperature, color contrasts, harmonies, time of day, mood, symbolism and storytelling with color.
ART 200 / RS 100 :: Computer Literacy for Design / Computer Applications
Introductory course teaching Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, and skills include digital painting, image manipulation, vector design, type and layout, as well as scanning, re-sizing and printing images.
GRAPHIC DESIGN CLASSES
DM 108 :: Digital Publishing
InDesign course for graphic designers. Students learn to integrate graphics and text, use multi-page layouts, grids, develop materials for print, and work with a local nonprofit as a client.

GD 121 :: Image Manipulation
Photoshop class for graphic designers. Covering both image manipulation and digital rendering. Skills covered include tools, selections, masking, layers, channels, adjustments, and painting.
GD 207: Digital Illustration (for graphic design)
Introduction to Adobe Illustrator, focusing on a variety of methods to compose shapes, manipulate type, and develop compelling graphic solutions.

GD 220 :: Advanced Image Manipulation
Continuing Photoshop class, developing advanced skills and building on previous course.
GD 2262 :: Message Making
Visual communication and semiotic techniques for graphic designers. Juxtaposition, connotation, and other visual techniques for implied meaning.
FM 4400 :: Catalog Development
Introduction to InDesign for Fashion Marketing students, focusing on producing a catalog.
ANIMATION/ILLUSTRATION CLASSES
ART 248 / GD 122 :: Illustration
This course combines learning new media and an introduction to illustration techniques. Students learn visual storytelling techniques, design process, how to interact with art directors, self-promotion, illustration genres and current market. In addition they also learn pen and ink, marker, and watercolor techniques.
GD 239 :: Conceptual Illustration
This illustration class focuses on stylization techniques, conceptual ideation, developing a personal style, and visual problem solving. Students use both traditional and digital media.
ILL 365 :: Digital Illustration
Illustration course in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Corel Painter. This class is essentially a studio course with each new software program serving as a different medium in which to work. Students produce illustrations with each of the programs.
MA 1131 :: Conceptual Storytelling
Narrative storytelling techniques for animation students. Plot building, structure, genres, as well as visual development in the areas of character, environment, and story.
MA 1200 :: Digital Painting
Studio course utilizing digital techniques to produce finished pieces, primarily in Photoshop. Students practice rendering characters, compositing and matte painting, creating a mood through lighting, color, and time of day.

MA 2201 :: Background Design
Introduction to background design with an emphasis on perspective, composition, color, mood, atmosphere, lighting and digital painting techniques.

MA 2300 :: Storyboarding
Introduction to storyboarding for animation sequences. Topics include pacing, story beats, camera movements, shot design, basic plot elements and visual storytelling devices.

ART 499 :: Junior-Senior Research Seminar
Independent study course where instructor directs a student in the specified area of interest. Student executes an original research project at an advanced level of complexity. I have taught two of these courses: First, a children’s book illustration and watercolor course, where the student learned advanced illustration techniques specific to the children’s book market and also developed media skills. Second, a Photoshop rendering course, where digital painting techniques were used to develop interior design renderings.
ART 080 :: Symposium Lecture Series
Visiting professionals present each week at a lecture series for visual art students. Professor develops contacts, schedules speakers, budgets, organizes the lecturer’s travel and holds a student luncheon each week.
